The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted our lives in terms of how we learn and adopting new routines is not always easy.  While online learning does take the safety of learners and tutors into account, getting used to the online learning environment can, in certain cases trigger anxiety.

These simple, yet effective stress management tips can help you to cope better in the online learning environment and make your virtual classes more enjoyable..

  • Socialise to re-energise  While you are engrossed in your learning material you may be so engaged that you put off keeping in touch with family and friends. Try not to isolate yourself while you are learning. Even if you only make a phone call to stay in touch – re-energising through socialising is one of the easiest and most effective stress management techniques you can use.
  • Get a good night’s sleep   It is a well-known fact that getting enough sleep helps to reduce anxiety and stress. Recharging your batteries with a good night’s sleep not only improves your online learning capabilities but helps you to reduce stress in general. It is recommended that you should aim for between 7 – 9 hours sleep per night and stick to this regime as far as possible.
  • Revitalise with exercise   It may not always be easy to factor in time for exercise but if you do you will not regret it. Exercise has been proven to be most effective in terms of managing stress for one main reason: it works! As little as a 10 minute walk can go a long way towards boosting your endorphins, which are your body’s very own ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitters. Exercise improves your mood and revitalises body and mind.
  • Eat well and be well  As simple as it sounds, eating well is a great stress-reliever. Here, we are not talking about ‘comfort foods’ such as those high in sugar and fats, but, those foods that boost your energy levels, such as fruits, vegetables, proteins and foods with a high fibre content.
  • Take breaks to break the monotony  Taking regular breaks to ‘clear your head’ can reap huge rewards when it comes to minimizing your stress levels. Since, when you have been sitting in one place for hours on end while you learn, to stay healthy, you need to take breaks to give both your mind and body a rest. Going for a short walk or meeting a friend for coffee will give your body and mind a fresh perspective. Like exercise, taking regular breaks will boost your mood and break the monotony.
